What it is
Vercel is the deployment platform built by the makers of Next.js. Excellent developer experience, thoughtful primitives for edge rendering and previews, and usually the right default for Next.js projects that do not have specific reasons to self-host.
Why we reach for it
- Preview deployments on every PR - design and product review on real URLs, not screenshots.
- Edge runtime and image optimisation work out of the box without infrastructure work.
- Good monitoring, logs, and analytics integrated at the platform level.
- Backed by the team that builds Next.js, so primitive support is always first-class.
When we don’t
- -When cost at scale tips in favour of self-hosting - a small DevOps team can run Next.js on AWS for less money at high traffic.
- -When the workload has heavy server-side compute that does not fit Vercel functions - move it to a cloud backend.
