OpenAI provides GPT and GPT-class models via API, alongside embedding models, speech, vision, and function calling. For most applied-AI engagements we start here - strong general-purpose quality, reliable tooling, and a solid enterprise data-handling story.
Why we reach for it
- Strong general-purpose quality across reasoning, structured output, tool use, and multimodal workloads.
- Mature API with predictable behaviour under load.
- Enterprise data-handling tier - zero-retention options are acceptable for most workloads that don't require self-hosting.
- Good developer experience - docs, playground, fine-tuning tools, and eval tooling all in one place.
When we don’t
- -When the workload has strong data residency or self-hosting requirements - an open-weight model on your infrastructure may be right.
- -When agentic behaviour or long context is the bottleneck - Anthropic Claude often wins on those axes.
- -When cost is the binding constraint and the task is simple - smaller models from other providers may be cheaper.
